Blog v/s Regular Website

people have asked me what is the best way to start making money. Should they start with a blog or a regular website. What are the benefits in each. I suggest different things for different people. Here are the main differences I see.

If you are a writer kind of person who loves writing, then I would suggest to go for a blog. But remember that people expect regular updated blog, else they will leave and never return. On the other hand, if you are a one time sort of person who wants to make money on a residual basis, but don’t want to write quite often, go for a website.

Remember that blog’s content is fetched by search engines and social media sites quite fast (as wordpress pings them), on the other hand, regular content may get some time to get indexed.

Blog can get you some links quick as the content is fresh and most probably related to what is the hot buzz around. It may be long before you get your first organic link to your website.

Even after all this, I say that the website will work better in long term for residual income and blog for regular (may not be residual) monthly income. You need not update it so frequently.

Which one I use to make money online?
I make regular websites for generic content like related to medicine, health, employment, sports etc., but I make blogs for news/views/gadgets type of content. Once in a while I create blog which looks like a website (eg: chemotherapy). The benefit is that, it is easier to update but still visitors don’t expect it to be updated regularly. It also get fetched quickly by search engines.

Earn Huge Residual Income

Before I start writing this post, I would like to tell others that I don’t know any thing about the forex trading. I have never traded in forex ever. Many of my friends taught me many times on how I can make big money in forex. But still I never traded in it.

But then what am I going to talk about forex here?
I am sure most of you must have heard about eToro and how many people have made huge money with them trading forex. But I am not going to ask anybody to trade in forex. I am a webmaster and I prefer to remain like that. And, I am making some good money with eToro’s affiliate program.

So how can you (as a webmaster) make money with eToro without trading forex?
eToro has a great referral program where they pay you $100 per paid signup or 25% of the revenue earned by them (and they earn huge revenue). If you like you can just contact them to select you for $2 per free signup program. They also have the 2nd tier program where they pay you the 20% of the earnings of webmasters you refer. This ads up quite fast.

So to make money with them, just register with them as an affiliate and promote their program.

Why is it different from other affiliate programs?
These days many people are making huge money with forex. Everyday many more people are learning the art of forex trading. It is the hot niche and the keyword these days. The conversion is very easy.

Why the lead conversion is very easy?
Because eToro provides free practice account which is exactly same as real account but the money is not real. People see that how easy it is to make money in forex. They see the money being made daily, so the just convert into paid member and start earning the real money.

So, I am making money in forex, but not by trading forex but making use of all the buzz around forex and referring people to it. The banners they have are also quite tempting and attract very high CTR. The best part is that this program is actually for people AROUND THE WORLD. Not just one country. Here are some sample banners:

So, go ahead and register with them as an affiliate, through my referral link. May be I can help you in getting more referrals below you, so you can also earn big.

Make Money Twice as Fast

This article will show you how a smart 15 minutes can double your ad revenue.

This guest post was written by Shaun Connell, the webmaster of Make Money, a free resource for individuals who want to understand the business theory behind making money online.
The bottom line of a business is profit, and the e-business is no different. Incredibly enough, sometimes we completely miss this simple concept. Given this, website oriented and designed to effectually increase profits serves the ultimate purpose of the website-based business, and is justified. Or, to be cliche: show me the money.

Beautiful but Stupid

Incredibly, there are often huge flaws in web design that completely ignores the proven ways of maxing profit without cutting into style. I honestly have no idea why this happens, but it’s incredibly predominant, even in “Adsense Optimized” web design. Even beautiful sites miss web usability. This costs thousands.
You can double your profit and make money twice as fast if you simply rework your design on basic principles of web-usability. Figure out what works best, then do it. Figure out where to place your ads, then place them there. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes, and can end up making you tens of thousands over time.

How Readers Read
Jakob Nielsen is a usability expert, or, maybe I should say he is the usability expert. He’s the foremost expert on making websites work. Literally. Getting visitors to stay longer, make a sale, subscribe to the newsletter, click an ad…this is who Jaokob Nielsen is. He wrote a report regarding a reading pattern study recently done, explaining some outrageously important findings.
Unfortunately, visitors don’t read all of our pages. They don’t read every word. They skip a lot, and scan for highlights. Visitors ignore almost everything. This means that some areas of the page are seen more than others, meaning that some places are better for advertisements than others.
It’s vital. And it tells us something that can be used to make money at twice the rate you were before.

In 15 minutes you could save up to 15% or more on your ad placements…

1. Middle Ads

Advertisements in the middle means outrageous amounts of extra clicks, and extra earnings. You can multiply your advertisement earnings by simply targetting the traffic in the middle, directly under your article titles. It works. It’s the best place for a single ad block.
2. Left Sidebar Ads
Incredibly, the biggest bloggers in the industry usually have a sidebar on the right with their advertisements, instead of on the left. The left converts more…way more. Money is literally being left at the table. This isn’t just about ads. Subscriptions, navigation links… an incredible amount of extra traffic and earnings is simply being forgotten because of the lack of fifteen minutes of preperation.
Do your homework, analyze the best places to place your ads, then do it. It only takes a few minutes of follow up, especially if you use wordpress. In 15 minutes, you could double your advertiser earnings.

Now go do it.

Earnings down! What to do?

The recession has started taking its toll. Online earnings are down. What should I do?

This is the question which is doing rounds in the mails and forums these days.

Are my earnings also down? What am I doing to take care of it?

Yes. My earnings are also down by around 25%. Previously, this was being compensated by the appreciating dollar against my currency (rupee). But now even the dollars has started depreciated again. So, the downturn has (sort of) started hurting me. What am I doing to resist it. Similarly what are the step you can take in these difficult times?
Here are the few steps I am taking. You can also try some of them. I am sure these can help you keep your earnings running.

Convert some of your liquid cash into earnings. Means, go out and buy some good websites. This is the right time. The earnings on the sites are on the lower side, so the valuations will be better. It will add to your top-line and will be a very good investment in a long term.
Reduce the percentage of the earnings you spend on yourself and increase the percentage you put back into your website. That means increase the marketing budget and hire more people/freelancer to increase the content on your site. That way you can compensate the decreasing eCPM by increasing the traffic.
This is the time to ask favors (and return them as well) from all your online friends in terms of links and mentions.

Go out and try to find your own advertisers and advertising deals. I am trying this and today only I finalized on a big deal. It looks difficult, but is not that difficult. If required, you can even try to do a monthly+CPA sort of mixed deal with your advertiser. It is sort of a win-win situation. But there is a problem in this one. This sort of deals are easier for bigger sites but more difficult for smaller ones.

Shell out some more advertising space on your website for some new advertising network. Every bit helps. Also make sure that this addition of new network is not reducing your earnings from other networks.

Are you taking some other steps to increase your earnings, then please share them in comments.

Adsense For Domains Launched

Adsense for domains, which was only available for only few big players like sedo and domainsponsors etc. previously is not made available to smaller publishers as well.

So what is “Adsense for Domains”?

This is a domain parking service similar to sedo.com where Google will show the ads. This service was previously available to only bigger players and we were required to park own domains with them. So the revenue from the domains was being shared with Google as well as the domainparking service provider. But now Google making it available directly to the smaller publishers, you need not pay anything to those domain parking service providers. That means more money (hopefully) to us domain owners. So now you have one more way to make money online.

You can read about this in adsense blog here.

The bad part is that it is right now only available to few publishers in USA. But it will be soon made available for all publishers.

Google Adsense Alternatives

Every now and then many people get banned fromGoogle Adsense for whatever reason. I am still a believer of the view that Google will ban you only if you have yourself done something wrong. Not otherwise. But many people have different views on it. Anyways, this post is not about how not to get banned from Google Adsense but on what are the alternatives if you get banned from Adsense. This is one of the most common question asked through email that what are the alternatives to monetize a blog or a website except Google Adsense.
Here is the list of few Google Adsense alternatives:

Kontera - Kontera is not exactly the alternative of Google Adsense, but its something with works best with it. This is my second best choice after Adsense.

ValueClickMedia - ValueClickMedia is one of the two best CPM/CPC based network (other being CasaleMedia). It is difficult to get accepted into it. But if you get into it with a quality site, nothing like it.

CasaleMedia - The second best CPM/CPC based quality network which can make you good money. Not that difficult to get accepted and have many quality campaigns for good CPM and CPC.

ClickBank - If you are new to affiliate marketing and want to try selling digital products, this is the best network available for you. You get auto accepted. They have digital products for most of the niches on the net. So whatever the niche of your website, you will find a product to sell on it.

Adbrite - Adbrite is also a good Google Adsense alternative for making money online. This works best for website which has huge number of impressions. I use them for not-so-good type of websites which has quite high page impressions.

Chitika - Chitika is a network which I think has learned a lot from its mistakes. There was a time it was not that good netowork. But in recent past, they have started different kinds of new products and is really becoming one of the choice of people. It has product like kontera as well.

NeverBlueAds - My best choice for proper affiliate programs. They have good collection of advertisers and has quite good support too.

Amazon - I use amazon by putting just one or two related books/cd/dvds link on all my sites. It is just just put one related link of a book or related product and forget it.

TNX - A new and the best (in my opinion) link selling network which allows you to sell links on any sites (even PR0) sites (with or without traffic). So if you have a new site, you can make some money with TNX by just selling one unique link on a page.

WidgetBucks - If you have a website related to electronics products or other shopping related sites, then you can make good money with widget bucks. It doesn’t work well with other type of sites.

Adtoll - Adtoll is a new and promising adbrite type of advertising network, which allows you to sell your own links as well as RON links.

TextLinkAds - Another way of making money by selling links on your website. This is loosing more and more revenue day by day, but once upon a time, it was the best.

Adversal - If you run wallpapers, pictures or celebrity related sites and have not much problem running the pop-ups, then adversal is the best pop up network right now.

There are other networks as well, but these are the ones which I use the most and recommend.

Infolinks Review

Infolinks Review

Last month I wrote a small POST about how I tried INFOLINKS and then moved to it from Kontera.
Its been more than a month since I am using Infolinks, instead of Kontera, on my sites. This post is the review of Infolinks services, providing information on how it is performing on my sites.
First, about the integration of the code in the site. It was very simple, just put the code in the footer file of all my sites. That is it. No other changes required in the site.

About the earnings part, I am damn happy about it. In Kontera, I used to make around $8,000 to $9,000 per month. But with Infolinks, I have made more than $12,000 in a month. That is a big 50% increase in what I used to make with Kontera. So hands down to Infolinks in this regard.
The earnings I am talking about are only from a subset of sites which I had with Kontera. I have still not moved 100% of my sites to Infolinks. I am moving them slowly. I think I will make even more when I move my other sites too. I am moving them slowly with time, so that I am able to track what sort of difference these new sites are making to my earnings.
I am sure when I will move most of my sites to Infolinks, it would be making me at-least $15,000 to $17,000 per month.

About the support part, I contacted their support team many times in last one month for adding my new sites. The response from the team was always within 24 hours. I really like a company if their support is prompt.

Overall, I would say Infolinks surely rocks. Thank god I moved.
If you still haven’t join them, go ahead and give them a try. I am sure you will thank me for it.

Adsense tricks

How to Increase CTR

An increase in CTR can mean a lot to AdSense Revenue. To increase AdSense revenue, either you have to increase traffic or increase CTR.

If somehow, you manage to triple your CTR just by tweaking the Google AdSense code, that equals three times boost in your traffic. Here are a few tips for increasing your CTR.

What Google AdSense Engineers say:

- An email conversation with a Google Engineer:

"Due to the dynamic nature of Google AdSense, fluctuations in your revenue will occur. Your earnings will depend on a number of factors, including the types of ads being served to your pages, the cost per click or cost per impression of these ads, and your users' click through selections. Regarding ad placement - the best ad format varies from page to page. We've observed that, in general, wider ads perform better because of their reader-friendly format. We strongly recommend putting your users first when deciding on ad placement. Think about their behavior on different pages, and what will be most useful and visible to them. You'll find that the most optimal ad position isn't always what you expect on certain pages."

- Google Optimization Guide:

For example, on pages where users are typically focused on reading an article, ads placed directly below the end of the article tends to perform better. It's almost as if users finish reading and asking themselves, "What can I do next?" Precisely targeted ads are just like answering their questions.

What Webmasters have concluded

Webmasters have very diverse views on how to increase CTR. It largely depends upon the keywords you are targeting, looks of your website, the quality of its content, placement of AdSense ads, page optimization and various other factors. Generally, AdSense blocks wrapped between the quality content works the best. For the websites having poor quality content, placing the Ads before the start of the content works best.

If you develop a poor quality content website, it will likely give you high CTR and clicks, but you will be getting low priced ads and also nobody will like to add your url to their favorites. But if you have quality content, that keeps the visitors glued, you may get low CTR, but you will be getting high priced ads and regular visitors, too.

Proper positioning of ads on your website has direct impact on your CTR. Change the location of the ads and watch changes in your CTR regularly. Try to locate the area of the page where the focus of the visitor can be. Generally, AdSense ads near the quality content or other crucial areas like navigation bar tend to perform better. But it really depends upon the keywords you are targeting, and the traffic you have. As the Google engineers say, more user friendly ads, more widespread tend to do better than towers and others.

The Traffic

AdSense comes after traffic. No traffic, no AdSense. Take a great care of your traffic. Your visitors expect some valuable information from you. Make sure you are providing quality content to them. This will increase your visitors' return back ratio. And only those visitors will return who are more targeted to the content you are providing. More targeted users mean more CTR. 85 percent of my visitors add my website urls in their Favorites, and most of them do return.

Install a Website stats monitoring software and regularly look at your web logs, and get a handle on where your traffic is coming from. Try to establish a pattern or relation between your AdSense stats and your traffic stats, so that if there are any marked deviations you can make a judgment on why there has been an increase/decrease and what (if anything) you can do about it.
This will give you new ideas to develop traffic.

Experiments

Experiment and experiment a lot, till you are satisfied with the tweaks you have done to achieve highest CTR. Track your page performance by making channels of ads in your AdSense Control Panel and experiment till you are satisfied with your CTR. Though, each such experiment will make you loose money for a day or two, as Google may take time to adjust with new changes, but it will be beneficial in long run.

Highest Paying Google AdSense Keywords

Description

Is it possible to find out what google adwords
pay the most? I've decided to research the topic and my findings so far show
that any sites claiming that they know the most paid keywords are a hoax. Read
on for details.

Highest Paying Google AdSense Keywords Hoax

A friend sent me a list of supposedly highest paying keywords for contextual
advertising. I wonder is this true or whether this is just a gimmick to make
other people believe so... and me supporting the hype by reproducing it here?
For your amusement the partial list is at the end of this article. (and don't be
surprised if google actually serves you those ads matching those keywords.)

Assuming that whoever produced this list is correct, by looking at the data one
can tell that NY and Chicago lawyers are willing to pay a lot of money to get a
potential customer via online ads.

But can someone explain why mesothelioma is in the top rank? Is it because
people are afraid to get it? Or is it because many people have it already?

Luckily Google doesn't allow porn ads, otherwise we would have been drowning in
nasty ads, which probably would have had the highest click rate ever.

The list

Here is a partial list:

I wonder whether I should research topics about lawyers and mesothelioma :)

Hoax Revealed

After receiving this list, I've googled for "Highest Paying
Google AdSense Keywords" and apparently there is a lot of sites out there
suggesting those words, most seem to concentrate on mesothelioma and lawyers but
the prices seem to vary. I'm still puzzled how did they find out that
information?

OK, I think I've figured it out: it's clearly a hoax. The source seem to be
coming from: hxxp://www.cwire.org/highest-paying-search-terms/, but it will just
trick you into clicking on some auto-generated content. Bad boy. No cookie.

Further search reveals more sites advertising similar hoaxes.
Oh well, the nature of the internet -- you get both: the good and the less good.

One forum (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=2301) has suggested
something that may give you an idea on the subject of keywords, but this thread
is very dated. For example it suggests to go to http://www.google.com/adwords
and try bidding at words and see which one come with a high price tag. Another
user suggested to use Overture

http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/USm/search/tools/bidtool/
.

But even that thread concludes that those techniques don't really work and
suggests:

You shouldn't be building pages for AdSense. You should be putting

AdSense ads on pages with lots of good content. Build the pages for

the reader, optimize them for the Search Engines, then you will get

visitors who are interested in the content and will be interested in

the AdSense ads. That is how you get a good CTR and that is how you

make money with AdSense.

and I totally agree with that.

Blog Tools

A couple of months ago I asked readers to share which blogging tools they use

Quick! How to Make Money with Google

As a website owner, if you are thinking about adding Google AdSense advertising to your website, there are a few important questions to consider:

How much money will I make from Google?
How do I Calculate my Earnings?
How much money will I make from my website?
How much cash will I earn using AdSense for Content?
How much cash will I earn using AdSense for Search?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How much money will I make from Google?

Based on our experience at Quick on the Net and the experience of our clients (these are website owners), as an estimation, you can expect to earn 97% of your Google money from AdSense for Content, compared with just 3% coming from AdSense for Search.

To put it another way, for every $3.00 you earn from AdSense for Search, you can estimate that you will earn $97.00 from AdSense for Content.

How do I Calculate my Earnings?

Try this handy AdSense Calculator. It's completely free and it will give you an accurate earnings forecast.

However, if you are not familiar with the terminology, we have provided a few rough estimates below, based on our experiences at Quick on the Net.

All you need to do is know (or estimate) is your number of unique website visitors per day. We've done the sums based on some reliable statistics, so you just need to check out the grand totals below.

How much money will I make from my Website?

The estimates below are based on certain assumptions. Let's assume that:

1) Every visitor to your website views 2 web pages which contain Ads by Goooooogle. This will create 2 page impressions per site visitor.

2) You have an average Page CTR of 3.5%. This means that 3.5 Google Ads are clicked for every 100 pages viewed on your website.

3) You earn $0.25 per click. Remember, these are estimates and assumptions. Some Google Ads will only pay $0.01 per click, whereas others will pay a few dollars per click.

4) You are getting a broad mix of clicks from AdSense for Content and also from AdSense for Search.

Notes
Please consider that the page impression count is only based on web pages with advertising. Pages which do not have ads will not be registered in your AdSense toolkit reports. With that in mind, if you wish to boost your income, it is a good idea to place your adverts above the page fold (above the scroll bar break) and remember to feature advertising on your home page, the most important page on your website.

AdSense keyword research

Google AdSense ads are contextual text-based ads that depend very much on the content of the page they are displayed on.
Obviously AdSense looks at several different thing to place the page at its correct location in the taxonomy so relevant ads can be selected and shown.

And consequently there isn't just one thing that can be changed to get AdSense to pick different ads.

One could argue that because it's such a complex algorithm that determines the theme of the page it doesn't really make sense to talk about keyword research and optimization in the usual sense.

There are basically two different reasons why you would want to do keyword research and change your pages.

To get rid of irrelevant ads, so you don't waste ad space on ads that almost certainly get 0 clicks because they are far away from what the visitor search for and expect to find.
To show higher paid ads, so you earn more per click.
So is Google AdSense keyword research something that should be treated differently from regular keyword optimization work?
Yes it should.

A page serving AdSense ads must serve a dual purpose.

It must attract enough search engine visitors by focusing on keywords with high demand but little competition. This is the way keywords are normally selected when you want the pages to generate traffic without having to put all your resources into tweaking and tuning the page.
It must attract high paying AdSense ads to maximize the revenue generated.
Let's say you have a page about "keyword optimization".
Through regular keyword research you have decided that "keyword optimization" should be your primary key-phrase.

Google show a favorably low number (4,760) of competing pages for "keyword optimization"

But a quick look at http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/search/tools/bidtool/ reveals that the maximum bid for "keyword optimization" is only $0.76

I know that there isn't a 100% correlation between bids for Overture keywords and for Google AdWords, but it's good enough to demonstrate why you can't rely on ordinary or traditional keyword research when it comes to maximizing Google AdSense income.

So what we are after now are additional keywords that are related so they can we woven into the content of the page - and help force AdSense to pick higher paying ads to show on your page.

"search engine ranking" would be such a phrase.

Google knows of 193,000 pages competing for the phrase "search engine ranking", so it's highly unlikely that you should be able to rank high for that phrase.

So traditional keyword research wisdom would say that it shouldn't be targeted, but when it comes to AdSense you have to think differently about this second keyword.

A quick look into the Overture View Bids tool show us that the maximum bid is $4.21

So the price an advertiser is willing to pay for clicks to the "search engine ranking" keyphrase is five and a half times more than the maximum bids for "keyword optimization".

So besides targeting "keyword optimization" to get targeted traffic to your page, you should also target "search engine ranking" to increase the likelihood that Google's AdSense will pick a higher paying advertizer.

An obvious tool to use would be the Site BuildIt Keyword Manager! if you have already decided to go with the benefits you will get from owning an SBI-based site.

WordTracker (of course) would also be an invaluable aid and you can purchase this service for as short as a one-day period.

Ken Evoy also did a rather lengthy additional Google AdSense review which should come in handy.

For an invaluable tool for generating supporting keywords you must take a look at Theme Master ,which does a great job of picking supporting keywords that helps define the theme of your page.
